Inspecting Your Home for Storm Damage

A big storm passes through the night, what should you look for the next morning? It’s simple!

First, take a walk around your property. Anything laying on the ground? Shingles, siding and fascia metal are building materials susceptible to wind damage. Many times you can’t see all of your house from the ground, so finding debris is a clear sign something went wrong.

Second, anything around the exterior of the house look loose? Shingles turned over, loose siding and flashings are all signs that these materials lost their fasteners and need to be repaired. They are not ‘water-tight’ and can lead to water damage inside the house.

Third, check your attic. With a flashlight, look at the plywood and the rafters for trails of water stains. It’s possible that some water reached inside the attic, but was not enough to stain the ceiling or drywall underneath.

Fourth, inspect all rooms in your house for water stains. Tiny closets or storage rooms can go unnoticed if you aren’t diligent in inspecting them after a bad storm. Consequently, days or weeks can go by while the leak gets worse.
